Daily Devotion, 04/08/2019, “Hope for the Hard Headed” Acts 10:9-16 NIV The next day as Cornelius’s messengers were nearing the town, Peter went up on the flat roof to pray. It was about noon, and he was hungry. But while a meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw the sky open, and something like a large sheet was let down by its four corners. In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds. Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat them.” “No, Lord,” Peter declared. “I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean.” But the voice spoke again: “Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.” The same vision was repeated three times. Then the sheet was suddenly pulled up to heaven. Peter appeared to be a little hard headed at times. Even when encountered with the words of Jesus (see John 13:7-9) or an obvious vision from God as in today’s passage, he didn’t always get or go with the obvious Word right away. It’s not typically ever a good idea to say phrases like “No, Lord” or “No, you will never…” to God but that’s what Peter did. Thankfully, God is patient with us and doesn’t mind repeating Himself for our benefit. Sometimes we struggle with letting go of what we’ve always known or believed even when it is God who is trying to teach us a new and better way. For example, when God tells us to forgive the seemingly unforgiveable, leave the security of a career we’ve invested heavily in or disconnect from a meaningful relationship, fully trusting Him and acting on what He has clearly said can be a challenge at first. Sometimes it takes time for God to break through our intellectual barriers, deeply held convictions, below the surface prejudices and relational soul ties. He has grace to cover the gap between our hearing and doing but don’t linger there too long. Life and blessing are on the other side of your obedience. You are loved! PS “Get up, kill and eat” is a favorite verse for hunters like me :)

Daily Devotion, 04/05/2019, “Blinded By the Light” Acts 9:3-9 NIV As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. Acts 9:17-19 NIV Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. What should you pray as you pray for those in your circle who are far from God? I’m sure there are many facets to those prayers but some of them can be seen in our passage today. Paul quite literally saw the light in his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. Pray that they will have a divine encounter with Jesus where they see the light of who He truly is. Pray that God will arrange the circumstances of their lives so that they will more easily encounter Him. Pray that God will put people around them just as He sent Ananias to Paul, to help them see Jesus clearly. I love how “something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes.” Pray that they will have the spiritual blinders, so to speak, removed so that they can see Jesus and what He has next for them. (See 2 Corinthians 4:4) You are loved!

Daily Devotion, 04/02/2019, “Joyful, Patient, Faithful” Romans 12:12-15 NIV Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. It’s been difficult to write in recent days as Sharon and I have been very much out of our normal routines, staying next door at my her mom’s place to care for her. As you may know, Sha’s mom, Elizabeth Butler, passed away peacefully as precious Sharon sang worship songs over her Sunday evening. Sharon has been the primary care giver for Liz since we moved her here from Monroe just after Christmas in 2013. It has been one of the greatest blessings of my life to watch Sharon honor, serve and love Liz so humbly, compassionately and relentlessly these recent years and especially over the last couple of months. Sharon possesses a quiet strength that flows from her passionate faith in Jesus and her intimate relationship with Him. The strength you need for the storm is forged in the intimacy you pursue in the sun. Sha has shown us that yet again. As Romans 12:12-15 says, we have sought to be “joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer” throughout this journey. Thankfully, we have had many dear friends come alongside us to share with us, show hospitality to us, bless us, rejoice with us and now, mourn with us. We treasure every prayer, hug and act of kindness so many have blessed us with. May we all walk closely with God and with one another. May the promise of eternity with Him and with one another bring us hope and strength. You are loved! PS The pic is of some of our small group friends praying for Liz and for us in Liz’s yard Sunday afternoon, just hours before she passed.
